Lorraine Comeau

Lorraine Comeau

Lieu de naissance : Lornevale, Nouvelle Ecosse

COMEAU, Lorraine Catherine -
With great sadness, the family of Lorraine Catherine Rankin Comeau, announces her passing, at the age of 80. She was peaceful, surrounded by love and family, as she joined our dad, her beloved Lew, in Heaven. Born in Lornevale, NS, she was the eldest daughter of the late Daisy (Brown) and John Alexander Rankin. She is also predeceased by her brother, Percy. Lorraine trained as a nurse at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax – a pioneering hospital in obstetrics. She finished at the top of her class, so proud to be a Grace Graduate. After a break to raise us, Mom went back to work, delivering or helping deliver more babies in Yarmouth Hospital than we could ever count. She loved her work, and it showed in her dedication and kindness. She still wore her class ring. As a young nursing student, Lorraine met the love of her life. Lorraine married Lew in 1960. So began a more than fifty year love story, filled with dinners, dancing, quiet moments, and lots of laughs. Mom still kissed Dad’s picture every night before bed and said “I love you”. Lorraine’s third role was that of mama bear. A proud (understatement) and doting mom (and later, Gram), she had an extraordinary amount of patience with our shenanigans (particularly dinner table debates). Mom was warm and accepting, and everyone instantly felt welcome in our home. She taught us kindness and empathy. For all her sweetness, she was a ferocious protector when it came to her family. She will be forever missed by sons, David (Trish), Randy (Wendy), and daughter Susan (Mark); grandchildren, Melissa, Jennifer, Ben, Tom, and Carolina, as well as great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Chloe, Mason, and Nathan. She is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Boyce (Reg) and Grace Rankin, and brother, Bill (Debi), as well as beloved nephews and nieces from both Rankin and Comeau sides of the family.
We’d like to thank the teams at the Yarmouth Hospital ICU, and the VG ICU, all of whom cared for Mom with expertise, warmth, and compassion. Sharon, you were a godsend. Marilyn and Bruce Murray, your friendship and support have been so appreciated. Visitation will be held from Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel on June 27th from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at Sweeny’s on June 28th at 2 pm. Interment to follow at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation. Online condolences at Sweeny’s Funeral Home at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net
