We, the family, are sad to announce the passing of Edmond Alexander Evong, age 82 of Sydney. God took him peacefully Friday, May 31st, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Sydney August 21, 1936, he was the son of the late Fred and Margaret Evong.
Edmond had a long and decorated career as a correctional officer for 25 years, receiving the Governor Generals Award for long and dedicated service upon his retirement. He spent 30 years as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces in various roles. He retired as Master Warrant Officer. He was a life time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12 serving on the executive in various capacities. Edmond enjoyed darts, bowling, dancing, was an avid curler and enjoyed watching his hockey. Edmond enjoyed socializing with his friends and spending time with his wife and soulmate of 62 years, Viola. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his buddy Patches, and hanging out with his crew at the Branch. He was known as a fair and honest man that would do anything for anyone and he will be dearly missed by all that had the pleasure to have known him.
Edmond is survived by his wife, Viola (Burke); his only son, Edmond (Noel); his sister, Kay MacLellan; grandchildren, Joseph, Robert, Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren, Haley, Jayla, Miya, Melina, Paige and Raymond; lots of nieces, nephews and cousins; his special niece, Margaret Ann, and special nephew, Brian Sampson.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant sister, Stella.
A very special Thank you to the staff who worked so hard in the ICU unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, June 4th, 2019 at TW Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 5th, 2019 at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa’s church with Father Dennis Lamey presiding. A reception will follow at the Legion Branch 12.
