Vernice Laura Huxter - age 80, of New Minas, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2019 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Falmouth, she was a daughter of the late George and Hilda (Aker) Merrett. Vernice was a homemaker for the majority of her life where she raised five boys, which she believed made her qualified to become a jail matron, a position which she was very proud of. She was a proud member of the Black Watch community. She loved playing cards; ladybugs and birds, especially cardinals but her greatest pleasures were her five boys, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by sons, Stephen (Jean), Halifax; Kenneth (Rose Marie Grover), Edmonton; Timothy (Sherry), Halls Harbour; Darren (Averill), Pointe-à-la-Croix; sister, Barbara (Lou) Davison, Canaan; brothers, Richard (Judy), Kentville; Garth (Carla Teal), Ottawa; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Sr.; son, Raymond Jr. and brother, Gerald. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, took place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2019 in the Orchard Valley United Church, New Minas, Reverend John Moses officiating. A private family burial took place in the Canard Burial Ground, Kings County. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses or the Valley Regional Hospital.
