Eric Preston Campbell

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of their father, Eric Preston Campbell, at his residence in Summerside on Friday, July 5th 2019 at 90 years of age. Born in Long River on Nov. 23, 1928, he was the son of the late Elwood and Jenny (MacLeod) Campbell. Predeceased by loving wife, Myrtle (Bernard) Campbell, his son, Derill Wayne Campbell and brother-in-law Scotty MacAskill. He is survived by the following: his sister Norma MacAskill of Niagara Falls; his children, The Honourable Justice Diane Campbell of Ottawa, Patricia Champion (David), of Sarasota, Helen Campbell (Don) of Golden, Kathy Campbell of Summerside, Marilyn Merkley (Chris) of Vancouver, Dean Campbell (Ann) of Charlottetown, Kim Campbell-Williams (Russ) of New York, Terry Campbell of Toronto and Gregory Campbell of Nunavut; by the following grandchildren, Brooke Champion, Jayne Campbell, Jasun Campbell, Spencer Campbell, Jenny Campbell, Janelle Merkley, Shelby Merkley, Reign Williams, Trinity Williams, Savaughn Hamilton and Kaylee Campbell; by the following great grand-children Leighton and Brooks Campbell and his nephews Brian and David MacAskill. His special canine companion, Mississippi. Our Dad engaged in many varied interests throughout his lifetime. His first love was flying, having obtained his private pilots license on Oct. 25, 1961, later being endorsed for his instrumentation for night flying on Dec. 9, 1969. He owned and flew a Beech Bonanza, Mooney Super 21, PA 22 Tripacer and Cessna 175, 180, 150 and 172. He also had the opportunity to fly Tiger Moths and Cornells. Dad was an avid collector and trader of WWII memorabilia. His expertise in identifying original pieces from reproductions was sought after by collectors throughout North America. He had donated from his extensive collection to various museums and associations. He was one of the original five directors who in 1962 started the Road Builders Association in PEI; one of several individuals who formed the first Western Capitals Jr. A hockey team and who along with Grant Grady hired Doug MacLean as coach of team. In 2000, along with the late Errol Laughlin, he was instrumental in the extensive research and erection of a monument at Veterans Memorial Park in Summerside to commemorate those 98 airmen who, during WWII, died while stationed in PEI. Dad was also one of several individuals, all members of the Aviation Heritage Society of PEI, who were instrumental in the restoration and display of three historical aircraft, the Tracker, Argus and Voodoo, which are presently displayed at the Slemon Park Aerospace Centre. In addition, to his own road construction company and later as Superintendent of Prince county Department of Highways, he was also owner and operator of Surf Cottages in Stanhope and of the Malpeque Cottages during the 1970’s; one of the original owners of the Sea Shell Drive opened in 1961, one of the first dairy bars in PEI; and with the restoration of the Mount Pleasant Airport in the 1960’s. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Summerside Palliative Care Nurses, Home Care Workers, Paramedics and Doctors for their exemplary care our Dad received during the many visits to his home over the last six months. A special thank you to his home caregiver, Lin Crooks, for the care and humour provided on a daily basis and finally for the support received from the staff of the Davison Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors at the Davison Funeral Home, Kensington, PEI on Thursday, July 11, 2019 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral service to be held immediately following visitation at 1:30 pm at the Davison Funeral Home and Chapel. Interment at the Geddie Memorial Cemetery, Springbrook, following the service. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers donations to the Geddie Memorial Cemetery, for which our Dad was a staunch supporter, would be greatly appreciated.
