JAY, Giles Maurice
September 2, 1925 – July 9, 2019
In his 94th year, of Halifax, passed away suddenly on July 9th, 2019 at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax. Born at home in Morell, PEI on September 2, 1925, he was the son of the late Jimmy Jay and Marion MacAdam. As a single young Islander, with a car, in 1950’s Halifax, he had many weekend trips back “home” with other Islanders, including Rosalie MacDonald of Little Pond, who became his wife of 51 years. They raised four children in north end Halifax. He was pre-deceased by Rosalie and son Paul, by his siblings Genevieve, Ray, Sister Eunice, Mildred, Al, and Ken.
As a teen, Giles helped farm with horses, drove a truck and worked in a factory before serving in the Navy during World War II, on the minesweeping ship HMCS Kelowna. After his service he spent his career as an electrician, starting out in Charlottetown, with brief time in Toronto, and Goose Bay. Giles then settled in Halifax, returning to spend long weekends and summer vacations on the Island, where many memories were made, giving cousins a chance to become friends for life.
Retirement from Hermes Electronics meant time for projects, summers in Morell at “the old house”, time with grandchildren, giving the best presents, and searching for the best biscuit, bread and “gin” punch recipes. He was an avid skater and hockey player, instilling the love of the ice with a backyard rink and continuing to skate until his mid 80s, making many friends in the senior skating community. He was both an avid reader and a great storyteller.
Known as a kind and loving brother, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his sister Joyce Murphy, children Karen(John Flinn), Wayne(Gail), Donna(Gilles Melanson), grandchildren Morgan Muise(Marc Gustafson), Ila Jay, Emma Jay, Jacob Melanson, sisters-in-law Mary Jay, Bernadette MacDonald and Eileen MacKenzie.
Special thanks to all the staff of 5 East for the care and compassion he received, especially Sachin and Angela for being with him in his final moments.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service followed by a reception will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, Parish of Saint Mother Teresa (formerly St Stephen’s), 6032 Normandy Drive, Halifax. Interment to follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 33 Old Sackville Rd, Lower Sackville.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
