MOUNCE, George Ralph — 95, passed away peacefully June 28, 2011 in his beloved home in Avondale, Nova Scotia. George was born June 3, 1916. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Annie Isabel Mounce, in 1988. They had one child, Mary Anne Mounce, who now resides on Prince Edward Island with her husband, Robert S. Mayne. He had two grandchildren, Julie Donna Mounce Comber and Alexander Mounce Comber, and step-grandson, Robert F. Mayne, all of Ottawa. In 1990 he married Ella (Luther) Mounce and the couple resided in Avondale for the past 21 years. A graduate of Acadia University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, George Mounce held both a B.A. and an engineering degree. During the Second World War, he worked at the National Research Council in Ottawa. He was part of the Canadian team that was responsible for the development of radar. After the war, he started an electronics company in Toronto, Electronics Associated, which specialized in equipment for the mining and paper-making industries. In 1970, he started Sea Electronic Aids, which was located on Puerto Rico and developed electronic equipment for sailing craft. In 1983, he moved back to the home in which he was born in Avondale and became involved in several diverse projects. Like his grandfather before him, George Mounce was interested in sailing, which resulted in his involvement with the Avon Spirit Shipyard in Avondale, from which a schooner was launched in 1989 and is still in service today. Arrangements were entrusted to Lohnes-DeMont Funeral and Cremation Service, 419 Albert Street, P.O. Box 981, Windsor, NS, B0N 2T0. A funeral service took place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2. Rev. Bill Gibson officiated. Interment followed at the Newport Landing Cemetery, Avondale. Following the interment service, friends were invited to join with the family for a time of refreshment and fellowship in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Humane Society of Nova Scotia would be appreciated by the family.
