Lillian Cecilia (Maroun) Hogan, 68, of Halifax, died in the presence of loved ones at the Victoria General Hospital on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011.
Born March 9, 1943 in Sydney, N.S., she was the youngest child of Thomas and Mary (Joseph) Maroun. Lillian graduated from Holy Angels High School, and went on to graduate from St. Xavier University with a Bachelor of Education in 1968. On July 9, 1971, Lillian was married to Kevin Dougal Hogan; her husband, best friend and hero for 40 years.
Lillian began her teaching career in 1968 in Dartmouth and went on to teach in New Ross and in New Minas. Until she retired in 1999, she was a passionate teacher who strived to make a difference in the lives of her students. She pioneered the teaching of cooking classes to boys in her Home Economics program, and met Kevin when she invited him to speak to her class in 1969.
Lillian enjoyed gardening and receiving guests at her beautiful Victorian home in the Annapolis Valley. Over the past year, she cherished the tranquility and natural beauty at her cottage in Moser River.
She was a selfless and loving mother, a devoted wife, a faithful sister and a proud aunt. She was also a loyal friend, a fighter and an eternal teacher. Her grace and courage in the face of her illness have been an inspiration to her family and friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Kevin, and her much loved daughter and son-in-law, Brenda (Hogan) and Tim Elson of Halifax. She is also survived by her sisters, Amy Zurawski, Bess (Frank) Horan, Adele Stroud, Martha Smith, Shirley Lewis and Virginia MacNeil and her brothers, Rev. Albert Maroun and Joseph (Molly) Maroun. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Sharon (Allan) Marble, Linda (Jim) Greene, and brother-in-law, Daniel Hogan.
She was predeceased by her sister, Mae Greene and brother, Norman Maroun, who died in infancy.
A special thanks to the staff of 8a/b and 5b of the VG Hospital, in particular Drs. Hadzimurtezic, Sparavalo and Shivacumar.
The family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society of Canada at www.teamintraining.ca in the name of Vicki-Ann Hugli who will be running in Lillian’s honour in San Francisco on Oct. 16, 2011.
A memorial mass to celebrate Lillian’s life will be held at St Peter’s Church at 10 Maple St., Dartmouth at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.
