Harvey Gesner "Bigelow" Hunter, age 89, of Springhill, passed away peacefully at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Saturday, August 13, 2011.
Born in New Glasgow, NS, he was a son of the late Morley "M.K." and Lillian (McLean) Hunter.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Navy. Following the war he returned to work with J.R. McLean's Bakery in Truro. In 1948 he and his wife moved with their first daughter to Springhill to open Bigelow's Bakery which remained in business until 1962. Their family was complete with the birth of their second daughter in 1949. He then went on to work for Correction Services Canada, Springhill in Food services until his retirement. Bigelow always put his family first, and adored his girls, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. An active member of the Springhill Baptist Church, he had a strong faith in the Lord, and a great love of music.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, the former Doris Ross, Springhill; his daughters Lynn (Omer) Bourgeois, River Philip and Bonnie (Allan) Stubbert, Springhill; grandchildren Bonnie (Andrew) Moore, Michael (Kim) Bourgeois, Billi-Jo (Mark) Warren, Aaron (Michelle) Stubbert, and Matthew (Charmaine) Stubbert; 10 great grandchildren; brother John (Gretha), Barrie, ON.
He was predeceased by brothers Leroy and George; sister Frances Chisholm and twin sister Blanche Ferguson.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the A H Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, NS (902-597-2361) where visiting hours will take place on Monday from 7 to 9 pm. Visiting hours will continue at the Springhill Baptist Church on Tuesday August 23 from 1 pm until the time of the funeral. The funeral service will take place at the church at 2 pm, Pastor Paul Berry and Pastor Jack Briggins officiating. Burial will take place in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill.
