Leonora Ann (Musial) Merrigan, 84, of Halifax, passed away peacefully on Aug. 24, 2011, at the QE II Halifax Infirmary, surrounded as always, by her family.
Born to a Polish family in Hampton, N.B. and raised as one of 10 children born to the late Michael and Bertha (Boutilier) Musial in River Ryan, Cape Breton.
Mom is survived by her devoted husband, Michael V. Merrigan; sons, Michael and Myles; daughters, Marlene (Jim) DeBay and Leonora (Charles) Thorpe; grandchildren, Michael, Christine and Meghan Merrigan, Dennis, Drew and Devin DeBay, Andrew, Michelle and Jillian Thorpe; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She will be lovingly remembered by her wonderful Cape Breton family: brothers, Greg (Ann), Conrad (Hazel), Paul (Sue) and sisters, Bertha (Archie) and Isabel.
She was predeceased by sisters, Katrina and Antonia, brothers, Charles and Michael.
Leonora attended the one-room schoolhouse in River Ryan, where at age 16 she became principal under the provisional teacher licence granted during the war. She attended Normal College in Truro as president of her class. Her teaching career in Halifax included Ardmore, Alexander McKay and Mount Saint Vincent Academy.
Mom seized the opportunity to continue her love of learning, receiving her BA, B.Ed., MA, M.Ed., all while raising her young family.
She proudly followed and encouraged the all-important education pursuits of her grandchildren.
Upon her retirement from teaching, mom gladly assumed the role of vice-president for the family business, Peak Audio until the onset of Alzheimer’s, which she fought admirably until the end.
Mom’s free time was enjoyed at the family cottage on the peaceful shores of the Northumberland Strait, all were welcome and all were fed.
Mom was above all a born teacher, a no-nonsense, hardworking wonderful mother, loving wife, strong in her faith, proud of her family and practical in all ways.
Time to rest now Mom… “The teapot is on.”
