It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Blake, age 74, of Glace Bay. Shirley passed away on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Stan and Margaret (Naish) Appleton. Shirley was a member of the Salvation Army Citadel, Glace Bay. She enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, going to bingo and loved gardening.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Arlene (Troy) Brown, ON, Patricia (Angus) MacLeod, Glace Bay, Marie (Roddie) Russell, ON, Glenda Blake, ON; son, Eric (Carol), Glace Bay; brothers, Tom Appleton, Glace Bay, Roy (Sis) Appleton, Glace Bay, Bill Appleton, Sydney; sister, Alglie Nearing, Glace Bay; several cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; son, Glen; brothers, Bernie, Arnold; sisters, Joyce, Anne, Edna and Dorothy.
Visitation for Shirley Blake will be held Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009 in the funeral home chapel with Corp. Sergeant-Major, Fred Courtney officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Salvation Army Citadel, Glace Bay.
