Dr. Lloyd Ingram Barber passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Regina Beach, SK on September 16, 2011 at the age of 79 years.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 55 years, Duna. He will be fondly remembered by his children: Muir (Debbie Winkler) of Regina Beach and his children Carolyn (Darryl Wolfe), Elizabeth and Michael; Brian (Bonnie) of Regina Beach and their children Bryn, Jillian, Brett, Kaytlyn, Suzanne, Lynn and Burke; Kathy (Jim Thomson) of Kamloops, BC and their children Ryan (Denise), Greg, Chad and Steven; David (Janet) of Regina Beach and their children Adam, Robert and Jon; Susan (Gary Benson) of Regina and their children Keith (Elizabeth and daughters McKenzie and Meija), Scott, Marni, Brett, Laura and John (Amber); Patti (Bern Leonard) of Cypress, Texas and their children Duke, Susan, Gordon and Bridgette; as well as his sister, Ada Lou Watson of Regina Beach.

Lloyd was predeceased by his grandson, Douglas and his brother, Lorne.

Lloyd was born in Regina and raised at Regina Beach, attending school there and at Luther College in Regina. He married Duna in 1956 and together they raised six children. Never shying away from adventure, Lloyd and Duna traveled the world extensively but always remained deeply rooted at Regina Beach. Lloyd was overheard saying that of all the places in the world, there was no place like his home at Trails End, in Regina Beach. His greatest pleasure was entertaining and being entertained by family and friends at the Lake. His proudest legacy is his six children and twenty-seven grandchildren.

He received his undergraduate education at the University of Saskatchewan before pursuing graduate studies at the University of California (Berkeley) and the University of Washington where he obtained his Ph.D. Lloyd joined the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan as an instructor in 1955 and became Dean of Commerce in 1966 and later Vice President of the University. He was named President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Regina in 1976, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1990.

Lloyd was an outstanding leader not only in education but also in business and native issues. He held many corporate directorships including CP Limited, Husky Oil, Bank of Nova Scotia, Teck Cominco, Molson Limited, Can West Global and the Winnipeg Commodities Exchange.

He served as President of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and on the executive council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. He was a founding member of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. In 1967, he was appointed to the North West Territorial Council and later served as the Indian Claims Commissioner of Canada from 1969 to 1977. He was awarded the Vanier Medal in 1979 by the Institute of Public Administration of Canada. He became Honorary Saskatchewan Indian Chief Little Eagle in 1980 and in 1985 received the Aboriginal Order of Canada. Lloyd was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976 and then, in 1993, he was promoted to the Companion of the Order of Canada. In 1995 he was invested as a member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

Lloyd made a remarkable contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of Canada, Saskatchewan and the aboriginal people of our country. The pursuit of knowledge was his favourite pastime. He always had a keen interest in history and current affairs and he loved a good, rational debate. His love of life could be seen in everything he did: from waterskiing to parasailing, to gardening and sailing. His generous spirit, quick wit and wonderful sense of humour will always be cherished by those who knew him.

Memorial Service will be held at the University of Regina, Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport main gymnasium (gym 3) on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Bryan Hillis officiating.

Interment will take place at a later date at Regina Beach.
