Local business woman dies at 79

Kathleen Marie Spears, passed away peacefully on October 1st, 2011 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow surrounded by her family.
She was born in Cape Breton on October 30th, 1931 to Gillbert and Mary Burge.
Kathleen went to Halifax Business College for accounting then went to work for Sears Credit office. She married her husband Carl and moved to Greenhill where they ran a dairy farm. Once she came to New Glasgow she worked in the Pictou County Home in Riverton. Kathleen owned and operated a large boarding house in Stellarton and the Norfolk Hotel in New Glasgow for 15 years. She received her real estate licence and acquired several properties.
Kay is survived by her son, Wayne; daughter, Arlene, both of New Glasgow; grandchildren, Leslie Spears and Sierra Bergman; siblings, Vye Stevens, BC; Art (Betty), Riverton; Mel (Dana), North Carolina; Betty Stark, California; George (Evelyn), ON; Leonard (Sheila), Florida; Les (Gloria), NB; Edward, New Glasgow; Kenneth, ON; Rosina, ON; Gloria (Dan), ON; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by father, Gilbert Burge; mother, Mary Burge, nee Foley; husband, Carl Spears.
The family will receive visitors from 6-8 pm Tuesday in P & K MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday from the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Royce Harris officiating. Burial will take place in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
