Catherine Elvira ‘Al’ Matthews, 93, of Greenwood, N.S., passed away Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, in the Heart of Valley Long Term Care Center, Middleton.
Born in Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Neil and Catherine (McDonald) McDermid.
Al was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She loved to watch hockey and baseball and was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan. Al enjoyed playing darts and going to the mall and meeting up with her friends. She was a past auxiliary member of the 107 Valley Wing RCAFA and was Miss Dominion in 1938 and Miss Middleton Manor in 2008 and was always young at heart.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn (Chet) Coleman, Nictaux; sons, Merle (Cathie), Sackville, N.S., Carl (Angela), Kentville; grandchildren, Jason, Russell, Ryan, Randy, Amy, Stephanie, Justin and Jessica; great-grandchildren, Larissa, Madison, Dominic, Romeo and Rylea.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, daughter, Gail Lorraine, son, Darrell Kevin and her brother and sisters.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448 with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Interment will be held at 4 p.m. in the Robie Street Cemetery, Truro.
Donations in Al’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the charity of choice.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to the staff at the Heart of the Valley Long Term Care Center, Middleton and the staff at Middleton Manor for all their care and compassion shown to our mom. The family would also like to thank her friends at the Greenwood Mall that always looked out for her.
