Betty MacDonald
Macdonald (Black), Betty Joy – 76, peacefully passed away Oct 26, 2011 in Amherst, surrounded by loved ones, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Lower Shinimicas, she was a daughter of the late Noel and Laura (Davis) Black. Betty graduated from the Nova Scotia Normal College in Truro in 1952. She taught elementary school in Schubenacadie, Shawville (Quebec) and Ottawa. She was married to Ivan P. Macdonald in Ottawa in 1958. She took a break from teaching to raise a family: Laura (Jeff Pinhey), Halifax; Ewan (Roxane Millette), Montreal; Paul, Amherst; and Mary Ellen (Franco Carnevale), Montreal. They moved to Halifax in 1969, where she taught evening quilting classes. She was coordinator of the Quilt Canada ’84 National Conference, and a member of the Mayflower Hand Quilters. Her quilts are in the collections of the Massey Foundation of Canada and the Nova Scotia Art Bank. Betty was an active charter member of the UCW. She graduated from the Maritime Business College in 1987 and then worked at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She and Ivan retired to Amherst in 1993.
Betty was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her husband; her four children; her grandchildren (Cory, Justin, Michal, Evelyn Jayke, Stephanie); her sisters Florence Bunn, Beckwith and Jean MacDonald, New Glasgow; her brother Archie (Iris), Lower Shinimicas; sisters-in-law, Norma and Delores and brother-in-law, Leon.
She is predeceased by her sisters Elsie Smith, Jewel Brander (Walter), Sybil and Eleanor; her brothers Eldon and Gordon and brothers-in-law, Roy and Bill.
Betty's remains have been cremated under the direction of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst from where the memorial service will be held Saturday October 29, 2011 at 2 p.m. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation at the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 and on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the memorial service. Graveside committal in the Shinimicas United Church Cemetery will be held at a later date.
