It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of our dear wife, mother, stepmother, sister, aunt and grandmother, Barbara Grace Smyth-Davidson (nee Durant). Beloved wife of Dave Davidson, married 24 years. Born in Summerside, she passed away peacefully on Oct. 27, 2011, after a brave struggle with cancer. Loving mother to Larry Ring (Sue Hylland) of Ottawa, Ont., stepmother to Kim (David) Hastings and Viki (Todd) Lacombe of London, Ont. Daughter of the late Neil Durant and Edith Cavell Durant (Dickie Dicks) of Prince Edward Island. Barbara will be missed by her sister, Mary Alice (Spike) Martin of Summerside, and her eight grandchildren; Kyle, Scott and Kellie Ring of Ottawa, Derrick, Tyler and Carter Hastings, Tanner and Kenneth Lacombe of London, Ont. Barbara was also an aunt to Christine Drummond of P.E.I., Michelle Martin of Yellowknife, Robert Martin of Colorado, Patrick and Kelly Lavery of Montreal. She will also be missed by her sisters-in-law, Judy Woodley (Fred Creamer) and Jane (Mitch) Lavery. She had a lengthy career in the federal government working for a number of cabinet ministers including Dan MacDonald, Marc Lalonde and George McIlraith. After many great years working in government, Barbara worked as the executive director of the Canadian Bankers Association in Ottawa and in public affairs for the Royal Bank of Canada, Ontario headquarters in Burlington. After retiring Barbara and Dave opened a bed and breakfast in Summerside, fulfilling her life-long dream. Between 2000-2008 the Warn House B&B became a popular accommodation destination for summer tourists. In accordance with Barbara’s wishes there will be a Celebration of Family and Friends to be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 1-4 p.m. at the Marlatt Funeral Home Family Centre, 195 King St. West, Dundas, Ont., L9H 1V5. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Prince County Hospital Foundation or the charity of choice. A memorial service and interment will be held in Prince Edward Island at a later date.
