Daniel Peter Wilcox, 91, a resident of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, formerly, Beverly Street, Mira Road, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011.
Born in Gabarus, he was the son of the late Bertram and Ella (Bagnell) Wilcox.
A veteran of the Second World War, Daniel served with the Merchant Navy aboard the Lord Strathacona and Rosecastle.
He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney, and an active member of the Sydney Pensioners Club, Club 55, the Royal Canadian Legion branch 12, Sydney, and the Masonic Lodge No. 81, Louisbourg. He also served as past president of the I00F.
In his younger years, Daniel worked as a fisherman. He graduated as a third-class engineer from the Adult Vocational Training School and worked as a diesel mechanic at the Sydney Whitney Pier Bus Co. and Scotia Limestone, from which he retired.
Surviving are his son, Dan (Una), South Bar; grandchildren, Kim, Drew, Philip, Cindy and Sean; six great-grandchildren, Bijoux, Erin, Ian, Robbie, Brett and Lucas. Also survived by his special friend, Bernadette LeBlanc; and many nieces and nephews.
Daniel was predeceased by his wife, Jennie (Mosher) and daughter, Joyce Tavener. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by his sisters, Nellie and Henrietta and brothers, Fred, Abe, Thomas and David.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Saturday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
