Joseph Whyte Arkles, age 90 of Moose Jaw, formerly of Arcola, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday January 2, 2012. Joseph worked with CP Rail, and as a letter carrier for Canada Post. He served overseas during WWII with the South Alberta Armoured Corps Regiment as a Radio Gunner Operator. He was captured and spent the last three months of the War as a Prisoner of War. He married his war bride Jeannie in England in June 1946. Joseph was active as a Little League and Senior baseball coach for 20 years, was a Cub Scout Leader (Balou), an avid sportsman, and won many shuffleboard tournaments. He is predeceased by his parents Robert and Elizabeth Arkles; brothers Oscar (Shirley), Raymond (Margaret), and Lawrence (Vera); brother-in-law Geoffrey Keal; an infant sister; and his beloved pets Casey, Timmy, and Kitty. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jeannie; sons Brad (Deanne), and Greg (Debbie); grandchildren: Tony, Jillian, Taylor, Alexa, Natasha, and Keilann; brother-in-law Douglas (Maureen) Keal; sister-in-law Gayle Keal; and numerous nieces and nephews. Thank you to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Providence Place, as well as Ken Dean and Ken Tressel who made it possible for Jean to be able to visit Joe anytime at Providence Place. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Aidan Anglican Church, 124 First Ave. N.E., on Saturday January 7, 2012 at 1:00 pm. Reverend Deacon Arlene Champion will preside. Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites will be conducted at the Church by Marty Martel. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will take place at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Thursday evening from 7 -9 pm. Memorials to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, Moose Jaw, S6H 7K7, or to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, c/o 268 High St. W., S6H 1S8, would be appreciated.
