Died peacefully on Dec. 30, 2011 at the Sunrise Beaconsfield at the age of 89. Mel Avon (née Arsenault) was born in Abram Village, PEI to Adeline Gallant and Francois Arsenault. Predeceased by her first husband George Rowe, and her 13 siblings, she leaves to mourn her husband Charles Avon and her step-daughters Susan (John Overton), Lauria (Christian Gachignard) and Ginette (the late Scott Avon), her grandchildren Steven, Charles and Lynn, and her goddaughters Joanne (John Borlase) and Claire (Cyril Gallant) as well as many nephews, nieces, grand and great-grand nephews and nieces. A long-standing administrator at the Royal Bank, Mel spent her retirement years residing in Florida, PEI and Montreal. Until this last September, she was very active at bridge, bocci, lawn bowling, cribbage and Scrabble, and will be missed by many friends. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at Résidence Funéraire Collins Clarke, 222 Highway 20 at Cartier Ave., Pointe-Claire. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at St-John Fisher, 120 Summerhill Ave., Pointe-Claire, followed by a reception. Interment will be at a later date at St-Philippe and St-Jacques Cemetery in Egmont Bay, PEI. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Old Brewery Mission Foundation would be appreciated (380 Saint-Antoine St. West, Suite 3210, Montréal, QC H2Y 3X7).
