Ethel Allanson

Ethel Allanson

Ethel M. Allanson, age 94 of Saint Vincent's Nursing Home, Halifax, formerly of Pictou County, passed away at peace after a short decline, at the home, on Friday, January 13, 2012, her daughter and son at her side.
Born in New Glasgow on February 24, 1917, she was the third child of four of the late James E. and Annie R. (MacLennan) Oliver.
Ethel worked at Woolworths until her 1943 marriage to John, a handsome RAF serviceman who she followed to England as a war bride on a convoy from Boston. They returned to NS some three years later with a family begun. A dedicated wife and mother, she enjoyed all aspects of homemaking and knit, sewed, baked and pickled her way through many years. At various times she was a member of garden clubs and branches of the Presbyterian Womens Missionary Society. She enjoyed sharing and reading her books (especially Celtic spiritual writings), listening to music and watching travel DVDs. She and John were fond of camping with Country Harbour being a favourite place. Along with John she became an avid TV golf watcher, something she continued to do with her son up to recent days.
She is survived by her loving children, daughter Anne (Walsh), Vancouver; son George, Halifax; many nieces and nephews here and abroad. Special mention must be made of June Jobe (and family), Westville, who she considered as a daughter and whose grandchildren she thought of as her own.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband John, and her dear siblings: William, Margaret and Howard.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 19th at the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Following the service there will be an opportunity to visit with family in the church hall. Burial of ashes will take place at Lorne Street Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, the Arthritis Society or a charity of one's choice.
Ethel was a friendly, observant woman of goodwill who was quick to make friends and quick to say thank you. Her determination to provide the best of everything for her husband and children, and her strong spiritual faith kept her grounded in life. She will be sorely missed by her family and all who cherished her spirit.
