SCHLAMP - On Sunday, January 22, 2012, Susie Schlamp (nee Funk), age 88, passed away peacefully at the Cypress Regional Hospital and went home to be with Jesus. Mom longed to make this final journey both to see her Savior and also to be reunited with dad and other loved ones. Her family was with her as she made this final transition. Susie was born in the village of Hamburg to Isaac and Anna Funk and was the youngest and also the last survivor of 14 children, 9 girls and 5 boys. There was 23 years between her and her oldest sibling. Mom grew up in the village and took her schooling at Hopefield. She enjoyed school and loved her grade 6 - 8 teacher, Mr. Neufeld. He taught God’s word and on Sundays mom and her parents attended a Sunday School taught by Mr. Neufeld. She loved to play softball and was always first baseman. At 14, she completed grade 8 and then eagerly stepped into learning her trade as a homemaker. She loved to work, learned to sew, knit, crochet and become a very meticulous housekeeper. Susie says, “I found my future husband at a young age. We courted for several years before I married this kind and handsome man - Peter Schlamp.” They were married on December 27, 1942, in the Chortitz Sommerfeld Church. They lived with mom’s parents for the first 4 years, then bought their own farm in Little Reinfeld, where they lived and farmed for almost 40 years. They were blessed with six children and stayed on the farm until 1985, at which time they moved into Swift Current. They resided in their own home until 2009. They lived in the Bentley until March of 2011, and then resided at the Prairie Pioneer Manor until the time of their passing. Their farm was of mixed variety, working the land and also milking up to 13 cows, raising pigs, chickens, turkeys, dogs & cats. Mom especially loved to garden and excelled at it. There were flowers, fruit trees, shrubs and berry patches everywhere. If we couldn’t find mom, we knew where to look. She was very meticulous about whatever she undertook, whether it be cleaning, sewing, cooking or her yard. She also enjoyed playing the harmonica, reading and games like crokinole (but got tired of dad’s twenties), horseshoe, Take 5 and Boggle. She also enjoyed a variety of puzzles. Mom joined the Sommerfeld Church in 1942. She memorized the entire catechism, her wedding vows, many songs from the Gesang Buch and many Bible verses. She often quoted these when she had sleepless nights. In 1951, she became a minister’s wife. This was a hard transition for her, but 7 years later she told us a “most beautiful movement happened in the midst of our now very traditional life.” Two of the new ministers had a vision from God and revival came into their world. People came to know Jesus and that is when this EMC church was started. We don’t have a date for when mom asked Christ into her life, but we know she did and her love for God and His word has not faded in all these years. Mom & dad were in ministry for 40 years and mom accompanied dad to the hospital and senior homes on countless occasions. She fed and hosted visiting ministers and their families sometimes for weeks on end. I guess when dad became a minister, she sort of did too. Mom missed dad so much since his passing in September 2011. They had been together for almost 69 years. She had just told us she was okay to stay a bit longer and then in October was diagnosed with a tumor in her liver. After that she was less okay to stay here and much more okay to go home to heaven. We are sad but so grateful that she didn’t have to suffer long and her wish to go home has been granted. Susie leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Henry (Anne) Schlamp and Eddy (Audrey) Schlamp; her daughters, Emily (Isaac) Froese, Carol (Jim) Martens and Mary (Steve) Henderson; son-in-law, Ernest Froese; 19 Grandchildren; 46 Great-grandchildren; 1 Great-great-grandson; sisters-in-law, Annie Funk, Margaret Neufeld, Matilda Krahn and Elizabeth Schlamp. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter; her daughter, Susan Froese; her parents, Isaac & Anna Funk; her stepmother, Katherina; all her siblings and their spouses, John ( Agnes), Isaac, Margaretha Funk, Anna (George) Wall, Margaret (John) Martens, Corny (Agnes), Isaac (Mary), Katherina (John) Klassen, Agatha (Abe) Leiding, Henry, Elizabeth (Bill) Leiding, Mary (Dave) Unger and Susanna Funk; her parents-in-law, Gustav & Anna Schlamp; and by most of Peter’s siblings and their spouses. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at 1:30 pm from the Wymark EMC at Chortitz, SK with Pastor Paul Little officiating. The pianist and song leader for the service was Andrea Neustaeter. “Where the Rose Never Fades” and “ There is a Redeemer”, were sung by the congregation. The obituary was shared by Edwin Schlamp with tributes brought by Emily & Mary on behalf of the children, Destiny Loeve on behalf of the grandchildren and by a PowerPoint presentation. Special music was provided by Grant & Mandy Friesen playing “In the Sweet Bye and Bye” and “Beyond the Sunset” for prelude and postlude, Archie & Sylvia Neufeld singing, “Will You Walk With Me” and “If We Never Meet Again” and by Mary Henderson, Melissa Schapansky and Jerry Froese singing, “Be Not Afraid”. The ushers in the church were grandsons, Doug Martens and Steve Froese. The Interment Service preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Wymark EMC Cemetery, Chortitz, SK with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers, Steve Froese, Doug Martens, Murray Froese, Gene Froese, Clint Schlamp and Ryan Henderson. In memory of Susie Schlamp, donations made to 100 Huntley Street would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
