Lieu de naissance : Smelt Brook, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de naissance : 15 novembre 1939

Lieu de décès : Edwardsville, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 8 février 2012

It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Ira Joseph Williams on Feb. 8, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Smelt Brook, Nov. 15, 1939, Ira was the son of the late Parnell and Ellen (Rambeau) Williams.
Ira was a member of the Holy Rosary parish, Westmount, and Church of the Incarnation, Edwardsville.
Ira was a carpenter by trade and was a housing inspector for the Nova Scotia Department of Housing. His work took him throughout Victoria and Richmond counties of Cape Breton during which time he met and helped many wonderful people. Ira loved the outdoors; hunting and fishing with his dear friends, golfing a round at the Highland Links, picking berries and fruit to make preserves, and taking walks down to the beach.
Ira was a recognized athlete and played softball for many years from the 1950s through to the 1980s. Ira also enjoyed playing hockey, and most recently skating with dear friends of the Coxheath Daytime Senior Skaters.
He was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He loved visits from family and friends, and especially looked forward to the annual visits from his adoring children and grandchildren all in Alberta. Ira will always be remembered for his singing and guitar playing, backyard campfires and adventures with the grandkids, and his jams and jellies were always in demand around the kitchen table. If you had the pleasure of knowing Ira, you knew you had a genuine, kind and caring friend for life.
Ira is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bridget; one son, Todd (Penelope), Grand Prairie, Alta., and three daughters, Peggy Lee (Robert) Peters, Edmonton, Alta., Ann Cherie (Craig) Korbut, Edmonton, Alta., and Jody (Stephen Gromack), Calgary, Alta. Grampy will be sadly missed by nine treasured grandchildren, Meghan and Nolan Williams, Tayleur, Brosnon and Rylan Peters, Madison and Kendra Korbut, and Thea and Emy Williams Gromack. Ira is also survived by two sisters, Madelynn (David) Williams, Saint John, N.B., and Agnes (Malcolm) Rudderham, Port Elgin, N.B.; and three brothers, Jake (Mary), Edwardsville, Willard (Colleen), New Waterford, and Winston (Patricia), Saint John, N.B.; and many neices and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ira was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Hennick, and brother, Archie.
Visitation for the late Ira Joseph Williams will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd., Sydney, on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 2-8 p.m. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of Ira Joseph Williams will be held Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount, with Fr. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment will take place at Church of the Incarnation parish cemetery, Edwardsville. Reception will be shared following the service at the Westside Legion, Westmount.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ira may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
Online condolences to the family can be expressed through www.pierfuneralhome.com.
Those we loved don’t go away, they walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, forever missed. Thank you, Dad, for so many wonderful lessons about what true love really is.

“Dear Bridget and Family, So sorry to hear of your loss. Another fine person sings in Heaven these days. I have wonderful memories of your early days together in the little house on Glencarin Ave in Westmount. My parents thought you both wonderful neighbours and that friendship stayed connected to our family over the years. My Uncle Paul and Uncle Peter , as well as my Dad, loved Ira. They had a lot of fun together hunting and fishing and just plain indulging in their special brand of shenanigans. My Dad says, there was not many as fine a person as Ira, and sadly he will be missed in life, but not in memory. Those boys made lots of memories together, and the stories go on and on. We offer our sincere Condolences. We hope the you find comfort in the wonderful family you created together, and the presence of those friends that will help you all go forward. Love, Hugs and Prayers. Jack Youden, and Daughter Karen”

  • The Loss of a truly Humble Man

Valerie Fontes (Odo) on 11 février 2012

“Dear Bridget: Todd, Peggy Lee, Ann Cherie & Jody & Families:

Our Thoughts & Prayers are with you all during this very difficult time.

Coming home from work (B.C.) on Wednesday, Feb/08/2012 evening & hearing that Ira passed away "rocked my very core". I/we are on one hand greatly relieved that Ira is no longer suffering and that he is now in the presence of Our Lord. On the other hand, The World has 'Lost' an Amazing man, a truly kind, humble and gentle Soul.

I have been a part of this Family, physically, for approximately 15 years and yet as a long lost Sister to Bridget was Welcomed into their Family, as if I had been there with them all my life.

I am so grateful for the times that I have been with Ira & Bridget and that I was Blessed with the Opportunity of getting to know him & Bridget & their wonderful loving Children & Families. I know my Husband: George feels the same way from his visit there. Our 2nd Son: Ryan who accompanied me to Bridget & Ira's 50th Wedding Anniversary feels the same. He thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone, his Cousins for the 1st time. As he put it, "You have some Cool Relatives out there". I/we will treasure our visit out there and am most grateful that we had that time with Ira & Families.

It saddens me that I/we cannot be there with you all @ this time, but we are most definitely with you in Spirit on this day, the day of Ira's Visitation.

May God give you his Peace this day, Monday, Feb/13/12, the day of Ira's Celebration of Life and in all the days to come. You are a strong & supportive Family and I know you will look after my Sister: Bridget and your Mother.

    God Bless You All!

    With All Our Love,

Valerie, George, Geoff & Krista, Jordan & Noah, Ryan, Darren, Tiffany & Ethan & Matthew

“To all the family, my sincere sympathy. We lost an angel on earth...but heaven now has one of the best.
Whenever I go home to visit my parents, I always want to visit Ira and Bridget. I was just home and I wanted so much to go visit to jam a bit, but worried that it was not a good time...and so it was the last few days for Ira; so glad to hear he was at home with family. I am not able to return to CB to celebrate Ira's life; I really want to be there to see you all. But, I will be there in spirit with my thoughts and prayers, and in song. I will write and sing a song for Ira and Bridget, such great people. Hugs to you all, especially Bridget and Peggy, Mary and Jake...hope to see you all again soon. Hugs.

  • The Spirit Carries On...

Meghan Williams on 10 février 2012

“My memories of Grampy Williams are very treasured and dear. I am his first grandchild, daughter of Todd Williams. I have always had a special connection with my Grampy. My mother recently told me that when I was an infant, I was a golden baby, as happy as could be when he held me in his arms. Grampy was always kind, gentle, loving and selfless. He was very devoted to his immediate and extended family, and friends were also considered part of the family. After attending their 50th wedding anniversary this summer, I truly realized how cherished & loved he was by everyone who knew him... As others have said, his reach of influence is far and wide, to the hearts and souls of many... I remember telling him how truly loved he was by everyone who knew him, during my last visit this past January, while he was in Pallative Care. I remember Grampy coming to Alberta when my dad bought his first rental property in Grande Prairie and Grampy came to help him fix it up and showed him how to side the exterior. Other fond memories include riding his boat while eating lobster and throwing the shells off the side, singing "Gillis Mountain" by The Rankins, while he played the guitar. He always adored me while I sang this song and he would even make me sing it upon my return, unrehearsed! He enjoyed every moment of sharing music together, with anyone and everyone. I know my Grampy was always a very hard worker, especially during his younger days while supporting his growing family... He would often work throughout the day. Then he'd come home for supper (which was always cooked!) and sit down with his family to visit with them. After, he would pick up odd jobs often keeping him busy & away til late hours of the night. He did everything in his power to provide the best life possible for his family and he accomplished this with honor and integrity. He was his family's hero, and I'm sure the same goes for all us grandchidren now... Our love for Ira Williams began when we were very small and has endured throughout the years and distance that never truly seperated us... Every moment of his exalted life will carry us forward thru this difficult time. His memories will lift our spirits and fill our cups with His essence of love and inspiration. Nanny Williams, his beloved children and us grandchildren will continue to sparkle for Him and praise his life and memories, always... We love you soo much Grampy. Thank you for making us your world and showing us the beauty of the simple things in life... You will always be in my heart, never gone and in my mind. As I remember to live, laugh and love just as you have done. May angels enfold you in their arms and carry you to the Great Place in the Sky where you belong. Love you always & forever. You have taught me so much, Thank you. XoXoXoXo ”

Ira was such an extraordinary treasure, a gift to anyone who was lucky enough to have him as part of their life. I have so many wonderful memories of him - and all of them include good times, and lots of joy always. Times on the boat, singing in the kitchen...the list is a long one. His spirit and the sparkle in his eye will be truly missed. What an amazing legacy he leaves, with his children he loved so much who now pass along that amazing love to their children...and on it will go. We will always hold him dear in our hearts. “I Remember Ira Williams

How sad I was to read, today, of Ira's passing. I can, in my memory, hear Ira's voice behind and to my left, in deep shortstop on the ball field at Point Edward. "move towards third base, Rollie, give me some room."

Ira was a quiet man of great strength and integrity. A terrific athlete, sure hands, quick reflexes, wide ranging, strong at the bat. Of course he would never say these things: so, I must.

Playing for the Point Edward Cubs with Ira was always a thrill. Archie at first base, Willard at second base, Ira at shortstop, Jake behind the plate, Winston in right field. Sprinkle in the Grants and Frasers, a few Lewises, some oddballs, like me, and you had a team. Wives, like Bridget on the sidelines cheering us on through triumph and disappointment, those were, truly, great days. Let's not forget them.

And so, I remember Ira, especially today, and I hope for courage and pray for comfort for his family, and the knowledge that his reach was far and wide, his influence great, his memory enduring.

    Rollie MacInnis”
