WICKENS, Ethren “Walter”, 89, of Bear Point, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 3, 2012 in the Veteran’s Place, Yarmouth with his wife and children by his side. Born April 20, 1922, in Bear Point, he was a son of the late Ethren and Olive (Harlow) Wickens. During WWII Walter served in England and Holland in which he received a medal from the Holland Government and ended his deployment in Germany. After returning to Canada, Walter served in Greenwood, Halifax and P.E.I. and then returned overseas to France and Germany. Walter came back to Canada from France where he served in Camp Borden, Ontario. Then finally to Barrington where he retired from the RCAF after 29 years. Walter worked another 16 years as a civilian employee for the Department of National Defence. Walter loved sports especially baseball and was an avid Dodgers fan. He spent many happy times hunting and fishing at the family camp in Clyde River. He also enjoyed many family vacations. He is survived his loving and faithful wife of 67 years, Dorothy (Williams), England; daughter, Dottie (Eugene) Varipapa, Wallingford, CT. USA; son, Warren (Sharon), Wasaga Beach, Ontario; grandsons, David, John, Jimmy, Michael; great granddaughters, Kimberly, Brooke, Paige, Ellie, Lila, Jessica, Sara; sisters, Norma Goreham, Woods Harbour, Edith Stoddard, Bear Point, Luella (Ken) Welton, Truro, Louise Thorburn, Liverpool; brothers, Allister (Judy), Seneca Falls, New York, Sandy (Peggy), Bear Point; many nieces and nephews.
Walter was predeceased by brothers, Earle and Arth. The family would like to thank the staff at the Veteran’s Place, Yarmouth for the excellent care that Walter received. A special thank you to Sandra Mowry for her kind care. Funeral was held on Thursday, February 9, from Bear Point Advent Christian Church, Bear Point, with Rev. Lloyd Stewart officiating. Interment was in the Birch Hill Cemetery, Bear Point.
