BREWER, Steven “Steve” Lawrence - 53, of Milton Highlands, Yarmouth County, passed away as a result of a motor vehicle accident on February 1, 2012. Born December 24, 1958 in Limestone Maine, he was the son of Alice “Doll” Brewer and the late Kenneth Brewer. Steve spent his early years living in different areas of the US and in Yarmouth. He moved back to Yarmouth permanently during his high school years. He became very well-known almost instantly within the basketball community for his skills and competitive drive, but also for his winning personality and sense of sportsmanship. He worked on the Marine Atlantic ferries and eventually on the Bay Ferries Cat. All of his co-workers enjoyed his team building skills and great sense of humour. Passengers often were impressed enough with his people skills that they sent letters of praise to the company. His sense of family was, indeed, strong. His treasured his mother, sisters and grandparents as well as his extended family. His marriage to Joan led to more family treasures, in particular, his children. Steve lived his life for his children. They were his most revered gifts. A man of high moral standards, he led by example, particularly with his greatest pride – his young, developing basketball players. He taught basic fundamental skills, but also the strongest of life skills, instilling fair play and sportsmanship which were never forgotten. Steve grew into refereeing and strove to attain high levels in this aspect of the game he loved. He eventually reached a level 3 in referee status, allowing him to referee with some of the best refs in the province, officiating at small college games in the province. Another of his loves was his cars. From the early days of his black Z28, the red Trans Am, up to his two-toned bronze Corvette, he was known for his immaculate care and cleanliness of his “babies”. His circles of travels have led to a wide, encompassing wealth of friends. His warm smile, infectious sense of humour and his ability to leave people feeling happier when he left was a true gift. Steve is survived by his loving wife, Joan (Poole), Yarmouth; daughters, Serene Franklyn, Halifax; Janelle, at home; son, Keenan, at home; sisters, Penny and Karen Brewer, both of Yarmouth. Steve is predeceased by grandmother, Freda Lawrence; grandfather, William Lawrence; and infant son, Jalen. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation was held Sunday, February 5 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A memorial service was held on Monday, February 6 at 2 p.m. at the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church, Rev. A.D “Bill” Newell and Rev. Robert Baker officiated. Interment will take place at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery, Kemptville, Yarmouth County. Family flowers only, please. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an education trust fund set up for Janelle and Keenan at TD Bank Yarmouth, Branch number 5490, Account number 6306469.
