Charles ‘Charlie’ Rodger William Fitt went to be with Jesus on Feb. 2, 2012, in Vernon, B.C., at 79 years of age. Charlie was born on January 23, 1933, in New Waterford, Cape Breton. Charlie had an exciting and varied work life including working the DEW Line, Ford Motor Company, and the Canadian Navy, serving in 13 ships and on four land bases spanning 21 years and covering coast to coast and around the world. Charlie also painted houses, was a drug and alcohol counselor while in the navy and with the forest industry of B.C. There was always a good story to go with each job. Charlie was a team player in all areas of life. He always looked for ways to enrich others’ lives. He was an active church member in every community in which he lived, enjoying being a choir member, board member and working at youth camps. Charlie lead an active role in AA and celebrated 43 years of sobriety. He was a champion of consistent weekly fellowship with members, holding each other accountable. Weekend retreats and round-ups were fondly remembered. He enjoyed his weekly visits and membership at the Royal Canadian Legion, Armstrong Branch 35. Charlie’s final 15 years will be remembered by his family as the blessing of togetherness. Charlie had a passion to see his son and grandchildren succeed. Daily he would keep us all focused on the goal for the day, week, month and year as we created our family farm. Encouraging us with each new advance on the property and often doing the legwork to research the cost and the best place to find what we were looking for. Charlie is survived by Ruth, his wife of 55 years; his son Chuck (Gloria); his grandson Charlie; his granddaughter Jenny (Jan) and his six-week-old great-granddaughter Reata. He will also be missed by his sister Marcie; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Charlie was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, John, Ray and Edward; and niece Cindy. Charlie’s celebration of life was held Feb. 6 in First Baptist, Armstrong, B.C. Charlie requested memorial donations be in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. (#4 1551 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, B.C. V1Y 9M9, www.heartandstroke.bc.ca).
