McINNIS, Daniel Joseph “Dannie” - 80, Truro Heights, formerly of Debert, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 10, 2012. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Christina (McNeil) McInnis. Best known as a drummer in several bands, Dannie played with the Legion Vets Band every Thursday during the senior’s luncheon and often played Saturday night coffee houses at the Salvation Army and in Debert. He played for a variety of country and gospel bands including “Higher Ground” and “Dove” during his retirement and always loved playing for Bill & Susan Huey’s band. He will be missed by all who enjoyed his music at churches and seniors homes through out the Truro area. Dannie spent his career with the Canadian Armed Forces. For 31 years he served in the Signal Corp and in both Cyprus and Egypt as a Peacekeeper. He also served in the Corp of Commissionaires for 14 years before his retirement and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro. Dannie is survived by his wife, Ethel (Hendry) McInnis; daughter, Jeanie McInnis Thompson and her children, Miranda Gratto and Michael Gratto, all of Truro; step-children, Wanda Davies, Toronto; Stephen and Carolynne Smith, Brookfield; Arlene and John Smith-Lowe, Londonderry; Cindie Smith and Michael Fleming, Greenfield; Tony and Debbie Smith, Lornevale. He was “Grampie Dan” to 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro, will conduct a Legion Tribute Service 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at the funeral home, followed by visitation from 7-9 p.m., and where the funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2012, Pastor Bill Martin officiating, assisted by Pastor Dave Hodder. Private family interment will take place at the Economy Cemetery in the spring. No flowers by request of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Maggie’s Place: A Resource Centre for Families.
