It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, Greg Bennett, 66, of Dominion. Greg passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Glace Bay Greg was the son of the late Elmore ‘Lynk’ and Annie (Doyle) Bennett.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport.
Greg cherished everyday spent with the longtime love of his life, Thelma. He was very proud of his three girls and his grandchildren were his everything. His most treasured times were spent planning and enjoying day trips to the family’s favourite picnic spot, Lake O’Law in Margaree Valley (Jig O’Law). Greg was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing the Margaree River with his family and close friends and spent many fall weekends hunting in the Highlands.
Greg began his law enforcement career with the Dominion Police Department, where he served 10 years. He found his true passion as a Conservation Officer with the Department of Natural Resources in 1988. He thoroughly enjoyed each shift with his longtime work partner and close friend of 17 years, Steve MacKinnon. Greg could always be counted on to entertain his fellow game wardens with his many stories and tales.
Greg will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Thelma (Hill); daughters, Carole Bennett, Brenda (Terry) Mullins, Lorena Barrington; sisters, Jeanne (Rick) Petrie, Glace Bay, Bernice Gouthro (John MacQuarrie), Gardiner Mines, Annette Bennett, Glace Bay; cherished grandchildren, Travis, Trevor and Brianna Mullins and Kennedy Barrington; brothers-in-law, Sheldon (Inez) Hill, Wendell Hill, Gordie (Joan) Hill; sister-in-law, Shirley (Chuck) Bodley. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Jason, Amanda, Mark, Terri-Lynn, Caitlyn, Alisha, Liam, Allison, Madeline, Charlene, Terry, Denise, Graham, Michael and Darrell.
Besides his parents, Greg was predeceased by a brother, Blair, sister, Connie and mother and father-in-law, Gerald and Mae Hill.
Through the years Greg has touched the lives of many. He was always there to listen and offer a helping hand. He will be sadly missed by all.
In honoring Greg’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb.15, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
We, the family, would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the wonderful staff and volunteers of the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that all donations in Greg’s memory be made to this special ward.

We love you with all our hearts. You are the bestest Grandpa in the Co Co.
