Steward Edward Purdy - 82, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, on Thursday, February 9, 2012 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Easton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Ira and Mary (Hill) Purdy. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and from 1947-50 served in Tokyo in General MacArthur’s Headquarters. As a Technical Sargeant, he ran a test lab for the Water Department for Tokyo. He was then employed as a research chemist, retiring after 40 years. Following retirement, he served for 17 years as an Episcopal Priest in Binghamton, New York. He was an avid stamp collector, and had been secretary of the Valley Stamp Club. He also enjoyed cross stitch, painting and playing bridge. He is survived by his wife, Miriam “Mickie” Ward (Palmer); three sons, James, Charlottesville, Virginia; David (Kathleen), Lansing, New York; Scott (Kelly Doolittle), Lock, New York; three step-children, Laurie (Marie) Ward, Coldbrook; Richard (Debra) Ward, Whitehorse; Gregory Ward, Coldbrook; a sister, Anna Mae (Ralph) Limeberry, Ocala, Florida; a brother, Edgar (Beverly), Martins Creek, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, four step-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ellen Bennett; a brother, James; step-grandson, Kirby Ward. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, Reverend Lynn Uzans officiating. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
