It is with sadness we announce the death of Ruth ‘Butchie’ Lillian Dooley, aged 93 years. Butchie passed away at the Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s, where she made her home since 2000.
Prior to this and for many years she lived with her nephew and his family, Gerard and Patricia (Mombourquette) Romard, Woodill Street, Sydney and for a short time with her sister, the late Vivian (Dooley Romard) Sampson and late Vincent Sampson, River Bourgeois, Cape Breton.
Butchie was a kind, gentle lady, quiet and reserved. She remained unmarried. In her younger days she enjoyed music especially strumming her guitar and playing the harmonica. Ruth enjoyed listening to amateur radio operators from around the world and made this one of her pastimes. She was always happy to report she made contact with the Holy Land.
Ruth was a devout Catholic and appreciated receiving communion on the first Friday of every month.
Ruth is the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary ‘Min’ Clarke (1966) and John Thomas (Jack) Dooley (1950) of Highland Street, Glace Bay. Ruth was predeceased by her sister, Marge (Ed) Jennings (1972) of California, Vivian (2006) (Murdoch) Romard, Sydney (1978) and (Vincent) Sampson (2004) of River Bourgeois and her only brother, William Dooley (1972) who was married to Jessie Boutillier of Glace Bay. Also predeceased by nephews, Billy Dooley (1961) of Glace Bay, and (Anthony Daniel Dooley) - Vincent Angus MacNeil (1989) of Sydney.
Butchie is survived by nephews, Gerard Romard and John Jennings of Sydney and Thomas Romard of Bedford, N.S. As well as nieces and nephew, June Jennings Nuttman of Novato, California, Brenda Jennings Unruh of Yucaipa, California and Paul Jennings also of California. Surviving also is niece, Mary Dooley Degratis of Edmonton, Alta. Donna Dooley and her family of Yellowknife, N.W.T. as well as Daniel Dooley, children of the late Billy Dooley.
We would like to thank the staff of Richmond Villa for their kindness to Butchie over the years and for the many people of the community who would always pop in to say hello and make her feel special.
