Kay MacEachern, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home (1996), formerly of 14 View St., Sydney Mines and North Sydney, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, after a long peaceful life living with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Gallant) Burns.
She was a former employee of Princess Credit Union, Sydney Mines.
Kay enjoyed being with Al, playing bridge, long walks, their beautiful flower gardens, skating, reading, swimming, camping, family picnics, lobster feeds, Cabot Trail, Antigonish Highland Games, baking special treats (tea biscuits, apple pie and brownies), reading and her many friends. She enjoyed the time spent playing crib and yatzee with her children and especially her great-nieces while in the area from Antigonish for Highland dance competitions.
Kay was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, a member of the CWL, and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Kay was predeceased by her husband, Albert, June 9, 2007, a former resident of Green Meadows, North Grant, Antigonish County.
She is survived by son, Burns (Donna) MacEachern, Stellarton; daughters, Clare Handforth (Tim), Malignant Cove, Patricia Estabrooks (Mitch), Amherst; grandsons, Kyle MacEachern (Alisha Peers), Trenton and Shelleby MacEachern, Trenton; granddaughter, Mary-Kate (MK) Handforth (Jason Quehe), Calgary; step-granddaughters, Alana Robson (Andrew), Amherst and Trisha Aylward (Ian), Lower Sackville; two special nieces, Ann Eileen and Maureen Fyfe, North Sydney; one nephew, Kevin Fyfe, Sydney Mines. Kay is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews in, Sydney Mines, Antigonish and Scarborough; plus five step-great-grandchildren in Amherst and Lower Sackville.
Besides her husband, Al, Kay was also predeceased by son, John, in infancy; her sister, Eileen (Mrs. Austin Fyfe); a brother, Peter and two siblings, Cyril and Kathleen in infancy.
Visitation for Kay will be held 2–4 and 7–9 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012 in the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, N.S., B2A 1L9, phone # 794-3418. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10 at Immaculate Conception Church, 49 Convent St., Sydney Mines. A reception for family and friends will follow. Burial will take place at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
