Jessie Wakefield

Jessie L. Wakefield, 96 years of age, of Amherst passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the Northumberland Hall, Amherst.
Born in Halfway River, she was a daughter of the late William & Annie (Welch) Thompson, the last surviving member of their immediate family and pre-deceased by seven brothers and three sisters.
Jessie taught school for thirty-six years in the River Hebert and Amherst schools. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Retired Teachers Association, a long time member of the Baptist Church and the United Baptist Women's Missionary Union. Jessie was active in the Amerst Y's Menettes and was made a life member.
Her first husband Earl DeWitt, second husband Alexander Wakefield, and special friend of many years, Ivan Trenholm all pre-deceased her.
Jessie has three surviving sister's-in-law; Elizabeth (Bruce) Thompson, Brookdale, Sheila (Harry) Thompson, Halfway River, and Lyall (Alison) Wolfe, River Hebert. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Surviving are three step-daughters, Elinor (Lionel) Berube, Fl., Gwen (Robert) MacLean, Brantford, ON, Ruth (Angus) Rogerson, PE, five step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place on Thursday, March 8, 2012 from 1 pm until the time of the funeral. The funeral will take place at 2 pm on Thursday from the funeral home, Pastor Donnie Miller officiating. Burial will take place in the Hillside Cemetery in the spring.
Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Hillside Cemetery, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice.
