Nellie May Ripley

Nellie May Ripley

Ripley, Nellie May - 100 years, Truro, peacefully followed the light to enter “a better world” on Wednesday evening, February 29, 2012. Born in Truro, October 30, 1911, she lived in Londonderry for 50 years, Oxford for 34, and at Samuel Prince Manor in Halifax for 13, before entering Garden Road Neighborhood at Cedarstone Enhanced Care almost 3 years ago. Daughter of the late Ethel Dewar, she was raised by Lillian and Daniel Meekins of Londonderry. A born-again Christian, she was devoted to her faith and family, and was loved by many friends over the years. A warm and generous person, Nellie enjoyed helping those in need, and she directed those with problems to take them to the Lord in prayer. With her husband, Arthur, they focused on the Bible and a spiritual life for the family. Nellie continued, to the end, to listen to scripture on audiotape. Music, too, was a vital part of her life, traditional hymns and gospel music bringing daily enjoyment and comfort. A few days before she died, she learned that both biological grandparents were musicians in the Salvation Army. Nellie’s church history included the Gospel Mission in Londonderry, followed by the Reformed Baptist Church there, the Nazarene Church in Oxford and the Missionary Bible Church in Halifax, pastored by the late Perry F. Rockwood, whose radio programs she listened to faithfully. Nellie worked hard in post-war depression days to raise the family, assisted by her blind husband, and without the modern conveniences. She always enjoyed gardening, cooking, quilting, knitting, conversation and stories, making surprises for others, and enjoying her pets. She was the loving mother of six, grandmother of three, and great-grandmother of four. Predeceased by her husband, Arthur, 50 years ago, and by sons Paul in 1970, and Joseph in 2001, She is survived by son, John, and daughters, Ida and Ruth (Ross), all of Montreal, youngest son, Art, of Calgary, and daughter-in-law, Beverly (Don) of Malagash; grandchildren, Anita (Darren), of Brookfield, and Anthony (Suzanne), of Roseau, MN, and Jessica (Steve), of Ottawa; great-grandchildren, Joseph of Brookfield, Abagail and Ashley of Roseau, MN, and Zachary of Ottawa. Daughter Ida devoted much time to caring for her mother over the past 15 years, during the last three of which, superb care was lovingly provided by Garden Road Staff at Cedarstone. In a scrapbook, “Nellie’s Story”, Ida attempts to document the life of her wonderful mother. Donations, if desired, may be made to Cedarstone Enhanced Care (Garden Road Neighborhood), the Salvation Army, or charity of choice. Visitation will be held 1-2pm prior to funeral service at 2pm, Saturday, March 10, in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro, Rev. Sharon Reykdal officiating, with a reception to follow. Interment to be held at a later date in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Oxford. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting the “guest book” at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
