Moeller
Norman Chalmers Moeller passed away after a lengthy illness at Fairview Mennonite Long Term Care Facility in Cambridge, Ontario on March 1st, 2012, at the age of 91.
He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 53 years, Clarice (nee Baker) in June of 2003. Beloved father of Brian Moeller (Rhonda) of Cambridge and Cora Fox (Glenn) of Rockwood, Ontario. Dear Grampie to Jasmine Fox, also of Rockwood. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted sister Meriam (Moeller) Matz of Cambridge, his cousin Carol (Jenkins) Andrews of Etobicoke, as well as cousin Inger Johanne Prois and her family in Oslo, Norway. He will also be remembered by his nieces Muriel, Joanne and Susan and nephews, Kenneth, Matthew and Michael, as well as many cousins in the Jenkins family.
Born and raised in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Norm received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, in 1943. He subsequently studied Theology at Pine Hill Divinity School (Dalhousie University) in Halifax, N.S. In 1945, he moved to Ontario to study Journalism at the University of Toronto, before starting his working career as a reporter for the Toronto Star, and subsequently for the Hamilton Spectator. Sometime later, he became editor of a weekly small town newspaper, the Hespeler Herald. It was during this time that he met Clarice Baker of Hespeler. They were married in Oct. 1949. The newlyweds moved to Preston, and Norm became the editor of the Preston Times, which later became the Cambridge Times. Shortly thereafter, he bought a publishing company called Baulk Publishers of Galt, Ontario. He changed the name to Galt Printers Ltd., and for the next 30 years, operated a successful printing business, until his retirement in January, 1985 at the age of 65.
Norm was always very interested and active in the community: Past president of the Kiwanis Club of Galt, the Graphic Arts Association of Canada and in his senior years, a member of the Probus Club.
An accomplished baritone singer, he performed with the Preston Operatic Society and was a soloist at church as well as at many events and social occasions.
Norm was a dedicated Christian and church member. Formerly, at St. Paul’s United Church, he was a Sunday School Superintendent for many years, sang in the choir, and as a lay person, he visited church members in hospital and nursing homes, where he often sang accompanied by Clarice or Cora at the piano. Norm and Clarice later became members of Knox (Galt) Presbyterian Church.
Norm had a special love for his family’s summer home “Birch Cove” at Little Harbour, N.S. just seven miles from his hometown of New Glasgow. He spent many memorable summers there amidst family and friends. He especially enjoyed boating on the bays and coves of the Northumberland Strait along the north shore of Nova Scotia.
The family would like to express our deep appreciation to the nursing staff at Fairview for their excellent care and support over the past 9 years. Sincere thanks are also extended to Lina Trim of Cambridge, who enabled Clarice to keep Norm at home for 6 years.
A memorial visitation will be held from 1:30 pm-2:45 p.m. on Sun. March 25th at Fairview Mennonite Home, followed by a “Celebration of Life” service at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at Fairview.
