Ralph Welton

Welton, Ralph Garnet – 75, Wallace Bridge, Cumberland Co., passed away Monday, March 12, 2012, at home. Born in Kirk Hill, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late Garnet and Evelyn (McAloney) Welton. Following his graduation from Parrsboro High School Ralph attended and graduated with a B A from Mount Allison University. He later attended and graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers College and completed his BEd at Mount Allison. He and his wife owned a hobby farm in East Leicester for 36 years prior to moving to Wallace Bridge. He taught for 25 years at the Oxford Regional High School and following his teaching career became very involved in municipal politics. He served as municipal councilor for district 7 for 21 years and during this time served in several capacities, including Warden and Deputy Warden of Cumberland County. He was an avid musician who could play many instruments and was a well known vocalist singing with many different choirs. He attended the Pugwash Baptist Church; served as the current chair of the Sunset Community Board; was a member of the Provincial Library Board, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Northumberland Chorale. He was a past member and president of the Board of Directors of Family and Children’s Services of Cumberland County; a former member of the Oxford Curling Club, the Parrsboro Citizen’s Band and the Truro Concert Band. He was truly community minded and family oriented and will be dearly missed. Surviving are his loving wife of almost 49 years, Lynne (Ackles) Welton; children, Jeff (Maureen) Penny, Amherst; Jeff Welton, East Chester; Jennifer (Ed) Gogan, Amherst; Joanne Carter, Amherst; Jonathan (Lynn) Welton, Bible Hill; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Ernest (Bernice) Welton, Parrsboro, two nephews. Visitation will be held today Wednesday, March 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in Mundle’s Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (243-2506). The funeral service will be held at 2 pm Thursday, March 15, from the Pugwash Baptist Church. Rev. David Young officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial in the Leicester Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Pugwash Baptist Church, Feed Nova Scotia or your local food bank.
