Bernard Wayne ‘Queenie’ MacQueen, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, March 18 in his home in Surrey, British Columbia.
He leaves to mourn his devoted and loving life partner Kim, their two furkids Morgan and Sydney; mother, Bessie; brother, Cyril (Rita); sisters, Brenda (John Yhard), Linda (Bob Fortier), Marybeth (Marc Ethier), Susan (Lindsay Rice) and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Wayne was extremely proud of his nieces and nephews and their accomplishments.
Wayne was predeceased by his father, Bernie and dogger, Kelsie.
Born and raised in Sydney, Wayne graduated from Sydney Academy in 1969 and subsequently from the University of King’s College (UKC), in Halifax in 1973. He was thoroughly active in the athletic and scholastic programs of both schools as a player, coach and leader and it was from these activities that lifelong friendships were developed. While at King’s College he was the recipient of many awards and was an active member of the alumni association. Wayne made his way to British Columbia in the early 80s - along with his dear friend, Jack. Despite his love for the west coast Wayne’s heart always belonged to Cape Breton.
Wayne had a lifelong love of reading, thinking and learning. Although he enjoyed his privacy and time spent alone, he was a great conversationalist, always willing to share his knowledge, opinion, and humour (??) on a vast variety of topics. Wayne made a difference in many lives. As a labour activist Wayne was driven to improve conditions for workers. As a correctional officer for 25 years (working with young offenders) Wayne later found himself in the presence of adults who cited the listening, mentorship and guidance offered during their troubled years as contributing to their later success in life.
Wayne never complained but believed in moving forward and remaining optimistic no matter what the circumstance. Wayne was passed from the loving arms of his wife into the waiting arms of his Lord and will be forever in the memories of family and friends.
Bessie and family will hold the Mass at Holy Redeemer Church in Sydney at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012.
