WOODLAND, MARGUERITE - Florence Marguerite Woodland, 89, formerly of Anna Maria, Florida, daughter of the late Ewart C. Atkinson, Q.C. and Florence J. Atkinson, went peacefully home to be with the Lord on February 22, 2012, in Queensland Australia. She was born on November 23, 1922, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. She attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and served in the Canadian Air Force during WWII. Thousands of Australian servicemen trained in Canada during the war and in 1943 Marguerite married one of them, a reargunner in the Australian Air Force named Max Woodland. After the war ended, they were reunited in Australia. A couple of years later, they moved back to Canada and had their three children, Christopher, Dale, and Melanie. The family then moved to Bermuda and lived there for about 2 years, then came into the United States in 1953 and later moved to Anna Maria Island in the mid-1950's. In the 1960's and 70's, Marguerite owned the 'Ports of Paradise' and 'Spindrift' gift shops in Anna Maria and Longboat Key. During that time she was also very active in the Island Players as a makeup artist. She was a member of Roser Memorial Community Church in Anna Maria. Marguerite moved to Queensland, Australia, in 1990, and resided there until her death. She embraced the Australian lifestyle and traveled extensively throughout Queensland. She also took trips to New South Wales and Vanuatu. She was also active in the Mooloolah Valley Social Club. She had a lifelong love of animals and always had a variety of cats, dogs, and birds. She loved gardening and had a very green thumb. She was a true survivor and was very independent.She was predeceased by her husband, Max, and son, Christopher. She is survived by her son Dale Woodland of Anna Maria; daughter Melanie Woodland Johnson of Bradenton; grandchildren Scott and Jason Woodland and Hunter, Travis and Cole Johnson; great-grandchildren Jordan and Savannah Woodland and Kara and Tanna Johnson; brother Francis E. Atkinson, Q.C. of Fredericton; half sister Joyce Mowatt of Ontario; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Canada, Australia, and England. One of her cousins, Stephen Harper, is the current Prime Minister of Canada.Cremation was in Australia and private memorials will be at a later date in Australia and Florida.
