Doris Ogilvie

OGILVIE, DORIS GERALDINE (nee DYER) - It is with much sadness that the family of Doris Ogilvie announces her passing on April 9, 2012 at White Rapids Manor in Fredericton Junction, her residence since 2011. She was 93. She is survived by her four daughters Mary (Bob Simmonds), Anne, Jane, and Susan (Ed Rice), and by her 10 grandchildren, Claire, Kevin, Tara, Graeme, Bobby, Maria, Andrea, Julia, Ellen and Faye; and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings, and by her husband, Dr. Robert Ogilvie. Doris was born in Halifax. She attended high school and university at Mount Saint Vincent where she received her Bachelor of Secretarial Science. She married Robert Ogilvie and they established their home in Fredericton, where he practiced dentistry. She returned to university when their youngest started school, and received a Bachelor of Civil Law from UNB in 1960. She was appointed Deputy Judge of the Juvenile Court and Deputy Judge of the Provincial Court in 1965. She was named as a commissioner on the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in 1967, and the Chair of the Canadian Commission of the International Year of the Child in 1979. She received honorary doctorate of Laws from Saint Thomas University and from Mount Saint Vincent. Doris will be remembered not only for her significant professional accomplishments, but also for her kindness and grace towards others, especially children. Even as Alzheimer’s disease stole her memory, her social graces remained intact. The family is grateful for the very excellent care Doris received at White Rapids Manor.
The family will receive visitors at McAdam's Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton on Thursday, April 12th, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dunstan's Catholic Church on Friday, April 13th, 2012 at 12:00 noon with Fr. John Jennings as celebrant. Interment will take place at a later date in the Hermitage Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, or to White Rapids Manor Foundation. www.mcadamsfh.com
