Don MacIsaac

Don MacIsaac died on April 10, 2012 in the Oddfellows Home in Pictou. Born July 1, 1919, he resided all of his life at 10 Hill St, Pictou, until entering a nursing home. He was a lifetime member of Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church in Pictou and held offices in many church societies including the Holy Name Society, Catholic Youth Society (CYO), and Secretary of the parish council and altar server at funerals. Don was a member of the Pictou Historical Photograph Society and the Pictou New Horizons Club. He attended the old West End School which housed the first Pictou Academy on Church St and in 1930 went to the four classes at Dawson School. He graduated from Pictou Academy in 1938 the year the school burnt and went to work in 1939 for the Canadian National Railways Express Commission agent for 10 years, then for the C.N.R., for 32 years retiring in 1981. A year later, he founded the Pictou Pilgrimage Group taking annual bus trips to the Quebec Shrines of Ste. Anne-de-Beaupre and to the Shrine of Our lady of the Cape until 2001. Don began taking and collecting old pictures and descriptions of people and events as a hobby and will be forever known as the Pictou Historian with his huge collection of historic photos of Pictou which he has contributed to newspapers for over 60 years. He also shared his pictures and write ups with anyone who made a request and has assisted authors, researchers, students and lovers of Pictou County. Don’s work has also been recognized on the ATV Collector program and the CBC Boys from Pictou. He donated his entire collection of over 8000 photos to the Hector Center, where people can now read and use his research dated from the 1930s and earlier. He received the ‘Paul Harris’ Fellowship Award from the Pictou Rotary Club in 2005, and was also awarded the Town of Pictou and Provincial Volunteer of the year for 2006. Don was predeceased by his wife, the former Beatrice Mary Bourgeois in 1974, and leaves behind many nieces and nephews and his four ‘angels’ Mike & Gerry Currie and Edgar & Cathy Larade. Visitation will be held 2-4 & 7-9 PM Friday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral mass will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday from Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou, with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall. Flowers only please and donations may be made in his memory to the Restoration Fund of the Stella Maris Church.
