Ann Theresa Higgins passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, NB.
Born in Sydney Mines on April 16, 1930, she was the youngest daughter of the late Neil R. and Sarah Catherine MacNeil of Sydney Mines, N.S. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
Mom spent a good deal of her childhood years along with her brothers and sisters between Sydney Mines and Benacadie Glen. This no doubt contributed to Mom's deep love for the quiet beauty of the Glen and anything Celtic. Mom attended school in Sydney Mines and was a graduate of Notre Dame School. In 1950 Mom married our Dad, William R. (Bill). Higgins and together they brought up seven children in Sydney Mines on Guy Street. Mom was actively involved in the life of her children and served as a great role model for us. She had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed tackling any kind of repair job that involved taking something apart; she also loved working with wood, and was proud of her ability with a hammer and saw.
Mom suffered a stroke in 2003 and was no longer able to stay at her beloved home on Guy St. Mom stayed for a while in Millville with Theresa and Clifford before moving to Fredericton to stay with Nancy.
Mom is survived by her children, Bill (Marie), Anne Halliday (Laird), Nancy, Mary Venditti (Gio), Catherine Nathanson (Brian), Theresa White (Clifford), and Judy Murphy (Doug). Grandchildren, Colin (Angela), Brendan, Donald, Jason, Kristi, Karissa and Connor, and great grandchildren Glenn and Jocelyn. Also many nieces and nephews including her special niece Marianne MacDonald, one of the Three Amigo's and her sister in law, Agnes MacNeil.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Neil R. and Sarah Catherine MacNeil; also her husband Bill and daughter little Mary; sisters Sarah Gillis ( Lawrence) Christina MacDonald (Thomas); brothers, Ronald ( Helen), Roderick ( Vera), Neil ( Vivian), James (Agnes). Brother-in-law Hugh (Buck) Higgins and sister-in-law Arthena Higgins, also her son-in-law, Brian Nathanson.
Our Family would like to give special thanks to Mrs. Ruth Lynch in Fredericton for your help and care in assisting Mom with her special needs. You were very special to Mom and a good friend to us all.
Mom was a loving Mother, grandmother and Great grandmother. We will miss you. Beannachd Dia dhuit!
Donations in Memory of Ann may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.
Visitation will be held at the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, N.S. on Sunday April 22, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral mass to celebrate Ann's life will be held Monday April 23, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines at 10 a.m. with Father J.J. MacDonald officiating.
