Bernice Smith
Bernice E. Smith, age 80, of Amherst, passed away peacefully at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, after a lengthy battle with Low Bulbar (ALS).
Born in Shinimicas, she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Edna (Johnson) Smith.
She enjoyed playing cards and was a very good crokinole player. Bernice moved to Amherst in 1950 and went to work at Fort B Flowers, she and her best friend Betty DeLong purchased Fort B Flowers and ran it for 18 years, retiring in 1997. She was a member of the Trinity St. Stephen's United Church, and an active member of the UCW at the church. She volunteered at the Amherst Food Bank for many years. We will all miss her hearty laugh.
She will be dearly missed by her brother Ansel (Evelyn), Amherst; sisters Gertie (Ken) Smith, Amherst and Audrey Nix, Williamsdale, NS.; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters Gwen Smith, Leona Smith, Flo Stewart, Reta Furlong, Shirley MacKay; brothers Leon, Raymond and Hilton.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place from 1 pm until 2 pm on Sunday. The funeral service will follow immediately at 2 pm on Sunday, April 29, 2012, Rev. Susan Estabrooks officiating. Burial will be in the Shinimicas Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the hospital for their kindness and care and to her true friend Betty DeLong for her support and regular visits.
