Thomas Settee passed away peacefully in Shellbrook Hospital on Saturday, April 21st, 2012 at the age of 97. Tom was born in Cumberland House, Saskatchewan on October 29, 1914. When he was five, his mother moved the family to Prince Albert. Tom spent approximately 7 years in Elkhorn Residential School and returned to Prince Albert afterwards. Tom took up the art of boxing that carried on for many years. He enlisted in the Militia and joined the North Saskatchewan Regiment. When the Second World War broke out, he was sent to Camp Dundurn to protect the camp. It was there that Tom joined the infamous Regina Rifle Regiment. Tom was sent overseas and trained for several years. It was during his time training in Scotland that he met the love of his life, Jean. Because of the war and circumstances after, they corresponded by letter for 11 years before getting married in 1956. Tom became the Canadian Army boxing champion in the Welterweight Division in 1944 and later went on to win a Western Canadian Welterweight and Middleweight title. Tom ran up Juno beach on D-Day, June 6th, 1944 as did many other brave young men. He was one of the lucky ones. He was injured approximately 33 days later fighting for the City of Caen. This brought to end his Army career. Tom took up the barber trade in civilian life and cut hair in Prince Albert for over 25 years. He was well known by many and all had kind words. Tom taught boxing in Prince Albert for many years and took a lot of young boys off of the streets. He not only taught them to box, but also taught them morals and discipline. Tom was active all of his life and when God called, he lay down and went to sleep. Tom was well known and well respected in Prince Albert. He lived a good long life and will be sadly missed. Tom was predeceased by his parents James Settee and Priscilla Deschambeault (Flett) and all of his brothers and sisters; his darling wife Jean (Wilson); his great-nephew Donald Marquis and great-niece Lois Marquis. Tom is survived by his daughter Liz Settee; his son Tim (Darlene); grandchildren Chris (Jackie), Brandon, Anthony, and Eoin; his great-grandson Vincent; his numerous nieces and nephews. Officers and members of the Royal Canadian Legion will confer veteran’s honours. In lieu of flowers or other tributes the family is requesting that donations be made to the Tom Settee Boxing Club c/o Bob Tichkowsky 833-12th Street West, Prince Albert, SK, S6V 3C6. There will be a private family interment at a later date. Family and friends may send email condolences to www.riverparkfuneral.ca. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Don M.
