We’ve said a final goodbye to our patriarch, John James Ferrar who passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 2, 2012.
Born in Saint John, N.B., on June 30, 1919, he was the son of the late Frank and Jenny (Durley) Ferrar.
A veteran of the Second World War, John served with the New Brunswick Rangers overseas in England, the Netherlands and Germany.
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 138, Ashby.
An avid bowler, he enjoyed playing with the St. Theresa’s bowling league, Steelworkers Pensioners Club and Club 55.
John worked, for many years at the Sydney Steel Plant, mainly in the coke ovens.
For 70 years, John was married to his beloved wife, Matilda. He is also survived by his children, Donna (John) Boyle, Windsor, Ont., Jim (Sybil), Robert (Sadie), both of Sydney, Barbara (Charlie), Boutilier, Sydney River, Linda (Bill) MacPherson, Northside East Bay, Ken (Alena), Deborah (Bruce) Jones, Michael (Rachael), all of Sydney, and Karen (Mark) Lewis, Elmsdale; 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his sisters, Lillian and Connie, brothers, Sidney and Frank and daughter-in-law, Kathleen.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Church on Friday, 10 a.m. with Rev. James Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to palliative care or the VON.
