It is with deepest regret the family announces the passing of George Brown, age 85 of New Victoria on Monday, May 21, 2012 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in New Victoria, he was the son of the late Hilary and Alice (White) Brown.
George was a devoute Catholic and dedicated member of St. Leonard's Church, New Waterford. He was a former member of St. Joseph's Church, New Victoria where he held various positions. This included being a Eucharistic Minister, lector, altar server and a member of the parish council. George was a former fire chief with the New Victoria Volunteer Fire Dept. from 1967-1974.
George worked at both 18 and 12 collieries for the Dominion Coal Company as a chief underground mining mechanic. From there he was employed with The Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology/C.B.U. as coordinator of trades training until his retirement. George took a keen interest in genealogy and he also enjoyed gardening and travelling.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Shirley (Campbell) Brown; sons, Blair (Jean), Howie Centre, Craig (Margaret Ann), South Bar and grandchildren, Stephen, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Lindsey and one great-granddaughter, Taylor. George is also survived by his sisters, Agnes Bolan, Vivian (Robert) Service, both of Hamilton, Ont.; one brother, Hilary (Carmel) Campbell, Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his first wife, Agnes (Singer) Brown; brothers, Senly, Hilary ‘Brud’, Urban, John, Rob and two sisters, Theresa MacGillivray and May Brown.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Friday morning at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard's Church followed by interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. All are invited to join the family for a reception in St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street.
As an expression of sympathy for George, memorial donations in his memory may be made to palliative care (An Cala Unit), Sydney or St. Leonard's Church.
