It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Derrick Mitchell, 78, of River Ryan on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at New Waterford Hospital.
Born in Newfoundland, and raised in Colliers Cove, he was a son of the late Peter and Maude (Richards) Mitchell.
Derrick was a coal miner at #12 and Lingan collieries. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Derrick was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners’ Club where he enjoyed playing darts and cards, namely 45s. He had a heart of gold and was very loving and helpful towards others. Derrick was a eucharistic minister and brought communion to those who were ill or unable to attend weekly mass.
Surviving are daughters, Heather (Herbert) Currie, River Ryan, Donna (Robert ‘Lou’) Moffatt, Ontario; stepdaughters, Mary Taylor and Sarah Roach, both of Ontario; stepsons, Archie Roach, Ontario, Wilfred Roach, New Waterford; grandchildren, Ashley Currie, Michelle Currie, Michael Moffatt, Suzanne, Annlouise, Kevin, Derrick, Chris and Donna; several great-grandchildren; neices, Janet and Coleen; nephews, Steve, Peter and Robert.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, Derrick was predeceased by his partner, Christina Roach, brothers, Jim Mitchell and Paul Mitchell, sister, Joyce Marshe, grandchild, Travis and good friend, Wilfred ‘Nookie’ Roach.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
