October 27, 1940 – May 22, 2012. Died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Predeceased by his father, Thomas, sister Anita, and darling daughter Sandy. Left to honour and celebrate his life, his loving and devoted wife Dorothy; son Derek (Lorraine); precious granddaughter Taylor; mother Lily Hunter; sister Sandra Hardy; son-in-law Ed Curtis; Uncle Fred Heffern; special cousins: Gerald Hunter (Kathleen) and David Hunter; sisters-in-law: Betty Bartlett (Dave) and Sandy Morgan (Angus); brother-in-law Lloyd Chipman (Verna); and many loving nieces and nephews.
Rex was born in Salvage and moved to Ontario in 1963 where he spent the next 21 years in management with the Co-operators. Rex and his family moved back to Newfoundland in 1984 and established a sales agency for the Co-operators in Conception Bay South. He retired December 2007 having been a member of the Co-operators team for 44 years. During the course of his career, Rex attained the designations of Chartered Life Underwriter, Certified Financial Planner and was a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada.
Rex loved and cared about people and made lasting friendships with people all across Canada. He enjoyed boating, gardening, reading Newfoundland books, playing trivia with his friends and working with wood.
At Rex’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m.-12 noon. A celebration of his life will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday May 25, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with private interment beside his daughter in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Topsail to follow. A donation in Rex’s memory may be made to the Diabetic Association, Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.
