Edwin ‘Bub’ Lewis Kabatay passed away May 24, 2012 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney he was the son of the late Theresa and Edward Notejin John Kabatay of Membertou, C.B. and Seine River First Nations, Ontario.
Edwin was known by his friends as ‘Bub’. Bub was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He enjoyed all sports, he especially liked playing golf, horse shoes, snow shoeing, playing and coaching hockey, and playing softball as a team member with the Membertou Thunderbirds. Bub also enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his friends. He was a past recipient of the Membertou Citizen of the Year Award; a proud member of the Kabatay Ceremonial Dancers and owner of Kabatay’s 180 Craft and Convenience Store. Bub was at the time of his passing, employed by Membertou Public Works in a supervisory position for many years. Bub will forever be remembered for his kindness and quick wit.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cecilia (Dennis); children, Brent (Leigha), Karen (Adam) and Edwin Jr. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Samara, Alexjij, Mathias, Scarlotte, Serissa. Also surviving are sisters, Irene, Edna (Wendell); brothers, Alfred (Freida), Edward John Jr. (Carol) and Harold. Bub is also survived by his aunts and uncles in Ontario and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and extended family members in Nova Scotia and Ontario.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother Peter and godparents, Isabel Doucette and John Doucette.
Visitation for the late Mr. Kabatay will begin after 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 31at 14 Veteran’s Ave., Membertou. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2 at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Rev. Donald MacGillvary officiating. Salite and meal to follow at the Membertou Trade and Convention Center.
