June W. (Phillips) Norris-Elye of Winnipeg, Man., passed away April 29, 2012 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.
Born in Glace Bay, March 1, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert L. and Dorothy (Willmot) Phillips of Glace Bay.
Predeceased by her husband, Oliver in 2010, she is survived by her daughter, Catherine Kleinsteuber and granddaughter, Erin of Powell River, B.C.; daughters, Dorothy Norris-Elye of Winnipeg, Jacqueline Adam and son, Alan of Anola, Man. June is survived by her brother, Joseph L. (Rene) Phillips of Toronto; sisters, Gladys Smith of Glace Bay, Rene (Bud) Howe of Rothsay, N.B. and Dorothy Ann (Neville) Harriss of Bedford, N.S. She is also survived by eight nieces and four nephews.
Graduating from Provincial Normal College in 1944, June taught school in Reserve Mines and Central School, Glace Bay, before proceeding to Halifax to continue teaching and to pursue her study of music.
In 1951 in Halifax she met Oliver, then a naval officer partaking in NATO exercises in the Mediterranean. The couple were married at Knox United Church in Glace Bay in 1953.
June’s children write of the good causes supported by their parents and of the help given to those in need, with unconditional love and caring. “As deeply as their loss is felt, the good they brought and the joy they made, still survive.”
A celebration of June’s life has been held in Winnipeg. Interment of ashes of June and Oliver will take place in Mira Bay Baptist Cemetery in July 2012.
