Don Griffiths
August 5, 1946 – June 5, 2012
Donald Benjamin Griffiths was born August 5, 1946 at Nipawin, SK to parents Benjamin and Pearl Griffiths. He was raised in Smeaton. He took his elementary schooling in Smeaton and high school in Choiceland.
In 1966 Donald moved to the family farm. He took great pride in farming and raising cattle. He took over maintenance at the Smeaton Hospital after his father’s retirement of the position. He continued his employment after the hospital became the Health Centre. After the North Haven Care Lodge was built, Don was hired on as caretaker there. He was hired by the Smeaton Village Council to look after mowing, garbage disposal and the water treatment plant. He currently remained responsible for the water treatment plant and was very proud of the certificates he achieved.
Don was an active member of the community belonging to the Smeaton Volunteer Fire and Rescue - driving the pumper truck and was the secretary of the Smeaton Legion. He has taught Fire Arm Safety courses and was happy to teach his nephew how to fire a gun. Whenever there was help needed in the community Don was more than happy to assist. Don loved to curl, hunt and spend time with people.
He always kept in touch with his sister Mary Anne and her family. He was a proud uncle and always took an interest in his niece’s and nephew’s lives.
Don will be missed dearly by his sister and brother in law, Mary Anne and Jim Krauss; his niece Natalie (Kevin) Roeder and children Jaime, Mickayla, & Alanna; his nephew Trevor (Nicole) Krauss and children Alyssa & Kolton; his godchild Tom Bailey and numerous cousins. He also leaves treasured memories to his special friend, Marlene and her family – Artie (Carol) Hamilton & their children Stuart and Savannah, Debbie (Terry) Schreiner and daughters Dawn (Jason), Ashley & Larissa, Marlene’s sisters Verna (Dave) and Linda as well as his many friends.
Don’s family is truly grateful to family and friends for the love and support shown to them at this difficult time. May Don rest in peace.
A celebration of Don’s life was held on Monday June 11th, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Smeaton Community Rec Centre with CSM Sharon Bruvold officiating. Interment followed in Aldergrove Cemetery. Memorial tributes may be made to the North Haven Lodge in Smeaton, Smeaton Fire and Rescue or Smeaton Legion. The family placed their trust with Coventry Funeral Services of Nipawin 862-4233.
