The Honourable Carolyn Layden-Stevenson

Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal

The passing of the Honourable Carolyn Layden-Stevenson of Ottawa, and formerly of Fredericton, wife of Donald Stevenson, occurred at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus, on June 27, 2012.
Born on July 23, 1947, in Saint John, Carolyn was the daughter of Kenneth C. Layden and Evelyn (Connors) Layden.
Besides her husband and parents, Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Constance Stevenson (Scott) of Summerside, Prince Edward Island; her sons, Daniel Stevenson (Sara) and Michael Stevenson of Fredericton; her grandchildren, Jake, Burke, Benjamin and James; her sister, Margie Layden-Oreto (Tony); her brothers, Kenneth F. Layden (Kim), Richard Layden (Ruth) and Peter Layden (Crystal); her nieces and nephews, Jason, Kathleen, David, Christine, Matthew, Dean, David, Susanne, Douglas, Mitchell, Maggie and John; her mother-in-law, Lois Stevenson; her husband's siblings, Doug (Marg), Barb (Grant), and Heather (Parker); and her goddaughter, Lori Campbell (Stacy). She was predeceased by her nephew, Brendon Oreto.
Carolyn taught in schools in Saint John and Fredericton and obtained Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Arts Degrees from St. Thomas University, a Masters of Education Degree and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of New Brunswick. After completing law school, Carolyn clerked for the Honourable Stuart G. Stratton, Chief Justice of New Brunswick, in 1984-1985. Between 1985 and 2002 she and her husband practised law together in Fredericton under the firm name Stevenson & Stevenson.
Carolyn was appointed to the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division, on January 25, 2002, the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada in April, 2002, and the Federal Court of Appeal on December 12, 2008.
Carolyn loved her work and colleagues, but her family always came first. She touched the lives of many and will be remembered fondly and missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, in Fredericton (506) 458-9538, on Saturday, June 30, and Sunday, July 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at St. Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church, 120 Regent Street, in Fredericton, on Monday, July 2 at 12 noon.
