Alison Hinchey, age 95, of Smith Street, New Waterford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at her home with her son Peter, daughter-in-law Marlene and grandson Evan by her side.
Born in New Glasgow, Alison was the daughter of the late James and Rita (Drake) Cunningham.
Alison grew up in New Glasgow and attended Acadia and Mount Allison universities. She graduated with a bachelor of secretarial arts degree.
Following approximately 20 years of living and working in Bathurst, N.B., Alison and her husband Peter moved to New Waterford in 1965. Alison was employed by the New Waterford School Board for the majority of her career.
Her prime passion was her family, never missing any special occasions. Alison’s greatest interests were sports and politics. She rarely missed a Blue Jays game or curling and figure skating events. Nothing excited Alison more than the announcement of an election; so she could get to work at the local constituency office. She proudly served the women of Nova Scotia as the Nova Scotia representative on the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women for several years.
Alison is survived by two daughters, Jean Mugford, Clare (Urban) Breen; three sons, Bill (Helen), Peter (Marlene), Michael (Kathy); eight grandchildren, Danny, Erin, Ryley, Janaia, Matthew, Evan, Adam, Alex and two great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Victoria.
Alison was predeceased by her husband, Peter Charles Hinchey, a brother, Donald, a sister, Jean Morris and a grandson, Mark Hinchey.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Duncan Roach, is Saturday at 11 a.m. in Calvin United Church. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, followed by a reception in Calvin United hall.
As an expression of sympathy for Alison, memorial donations in her memory may be made to Breton Education Centre Scholarship Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
