Marion Johnston

Marion Johnston

JOHNSTON, MARION GERTRUDE (nee SPROULL) - August 1, 1921 - August 7, 2012 - Wife of the late Roland Johnston (1994). Proud mother of Fred (Linda) Johnston of Newmarket, Gail Johnston (friend Gord Light) of Toronto and David (Rosemary) Johnston of Toronto. Grandmother to Jennifer (David) Heikamp, Heather (Steve) Priestly, Katelyn Johnston and Stacey Johnston. Great-grandmother to Michael and Matthew Heikamp. Dear sister to Ersel Sproull. Predeceased by brothers and sisters Lowther, Eleanor, John, Cecil, Maxon, and Iona. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, special friend to many relatives and friends. Born in the farming village of Millville, New Brunswick, Marion helped out on the family farm along with her siblings. She was later employed at Estey’s General Store in Millville where she learned the “ins and outs” of small business. Later, she moved to Toronto to work at the John Inglis Plant where she made parts for Bren Guns as part of the WWII effort. Marion married returning veteran Roly on November 17, 1945. They lived between Victoria Corner, New Brunswick and Toronto, Ontario before settling in Toronto and buying Penrose Sea Grill (now Penrose Fish & Chips) in 1950. Hard work, long hours and family became the focus of Marion’s life. Nicknamed “The Nice Lady” by her cherished customers, Marion was still serving up fish and chips with her smile and soft voice well into her 91st year. Marion made her final journey with the same dignity and grace with which she lived her life. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Special thanks to Dr. Ko and his support staff at The Odette Cancer Centre, to Mary Glavassevich and her team on D6, and to all in K1C Palliative Unit.
